Good book that has MacArthur's touch of thoroughness and explains why I was so bewildered when I started searching for a church home after a 25 year absence (but then again, much of what he talks about in this book was why I left in the first place, just that it wasn't so prevalent as it is today). His descriptions of some of these "churches" is spot-on. The immature, carnal, and unbelievers have taken over a lot of churches and are more interested in entertainment, status, and other worldly criteria to fill the pews, rather than relying on God and solid Bible teaching. No need to name the specific churches, they're all over. It's a good blueprint on how to properly minister a church (and what not to do) from a biblical standpoint, and also for someone like myself who's looking for a Bible-teaching, no-nonsense church. JM doesn't pull any punches in this book, (but then, he usually doesn't).However, it seems he leaned a little too heavily on quotes from Charles Spurgeon, it was looking more like filler. He also got side-tracked on Calvinism, to the point where you can skip most of Chapter 8. Normally, I ignore (or cringe at) MacArthur's occasional and brief references to the "elect" because his commentaries and sermons are otherwise very helpful (see my review about his book "Freedom and Power of Forgiveness"). I would not hesitate to buy any of his books that would help me with my spiritual walk.
I couldn't agree more with the author's main points. I wish that all pastors of "user-friendly" churches would read and reflect on this book. Fortunately, I have not visited any church that has lost its way to the extent of the churches that the author describes. Wrestling matches during Sunday service? Ridiculous and very sad.I took away one star because the book is quite repetitious -- which I suppose was intentional -- and because I think that the author tried to oversell his points occasionally (for example, by stating that "human wisdom has changed nothing"; I don't see that as an accurate statement at all).

Repetition can be a good teaching device, but it can make a book harder to read when it is done too often.There are some discussions about Spurgeon, some in detail, but it was not excessive. I think history can be a good teacher. Our times are not so different from 100 years ago.The author is the pastor of a large church, but don't let that be a determining factor (Scripture should be). He points out what many successful large churches have at their core -- striving after God's will and not man's will. Unfortunately, too many churches try to find the little "tricks" that large churches use to get people in the doors. They forget that there are no tricks, just follow God and He will bless as HE desires -- the church may or may not grow in numbers (width) but certainly will grow in Him (depth).If you, like I, have been at a church that puts numerical growth before spiritual growth, you probably have some idea of how cancerous it can be. Pray that our churches shun that and follow God. This book is a good start.
This MacArthur book is definitely for all believers. It would be #1 on the best seller list if every Christian that needed to read it bought it! Christ's Gospel has been all but "shelved" because Christian's have cowered to the secular pressures and false teachings so prevalent in today's Liberal Denominations and the "New Age, Charismatic, seeker sensitive, Bible optional, post modern, relativistic and pragmatic mega churches. Dr. MacArthur's "Ashamed of the Gospel" is must reading for all Christians. Hopefully it will "shame" or "inspire" Christian Soldiers Onward!
The brilliance of John MacArthur's book, "Ashamed of the Gospel" is that it was written long before Rick Warren and Bill Hybels were household names. MacArthur, like Spurgeon a century ago, is one of our generation's leading apologist for defending the faith and the intregrity of biblical doctrines.The evangelical church that I knew (until about 1995) was a place where the gospel was upheld and the bible was looked at as the infallible, inspired Word of God. This evangelical church largely arose because of the apostasy that invaded the mainline denominations some 80-100 years ago. Now that same apostasy has invaded Evangelicalism and the term "evangelical" no longer has any firm meaning in my mind.Blame it on many factors. One key factor are pastors who figured out they could obtain larger churches, prominence, and prestige by preaching a "partial Christianity" that contains bits and pieces of the truth, and downplays or ignores the other doctrines that don't appeal to the masses. Rick Warren is especially dangerous as he surveyed his potential audience to discover what they wanted preached. Of course, that model works in today's consumer mentality. Rick has placed man's needs above God's words.Another blame is on people themselves. They don't want to hear truth and the marketplace has rewarded pastors who placate people's needs to be "churched" but not taught anything controversial or difficult to believe. Mixed together, [heathen pagans plus limp-willed pastors] and you get a pretty good understanding of what evangelicalism has become.God will never be denied a witness in any generation and John MacArthur is one of a diminishing number of sound bible teachers today who dares to take an unpopular and difficult stand when communicating God's message.Especially powerful in this book was beginning on page 121 and Paul's exposition of the gospel in the Book of Romans. Paul's approach to the gospel begins with the bad news of man's sin and God's wrath. It is hard to appreciate the good news of the gospel unless one fully understands just how wicked and needing of a savior we are. The seeker-sensitive movement always ignores this point and immediately jumps to the good news. Consequently we have many people in today's seeker-sensitive church who are getting "saved", but they have no idea from what.Another chapter of note is Chapter 7 on Paul preaching on Mars Hill in Acts Ch. 17. MacArthur makes the case that many church leaders read more into the text about pragmatism than is there. Paul did not compromise his message while preaching in the open marketplace of the day; today's preachers are compromising right and left. Paul was direct; he didn't win many converts. Look at the seeker-sensitive movement today attracting millions. One thing we know about biblical truth is that if the masses are running to some book or teaching, be cautious. That is a flashing warning sign that deception is nearby.I can't wait to read MacArthur's new book, "The Truth War."
