Covers a lot of topics regarding small talk, networking, conversation, and how to get better at all of it. For some reason the look inside section isn't working, so here is a preview of what's in the book:-Why humans are a social animal-How to be popular like in high school-Just being positive actually works-How self perception really makes a difference-A roadmap to what people like in others-Emotional calibration and empathyOk I'm too lazy to write more but you get the picture. I liked this book and learned a lot from it, which is the most important part.

Enjoyable read I happened to come across while browsing Amazon. Lots of fantastic information about social intelligence. Not quite defined in the same way as Daniel Goleman's excellent book Social Intelligence, but just as imperative to your social success. King takes the reader through the roots of socialization and how the human brain evolved for it, through tips that you can apply in a conversation today. Even if I knew some of the advice, it's not like I knew why -- and now I do.Would recommend this book to anyone because it's a topic that gives understanding, and who couldn't use more of that?

The Science of Social Intelligence isn’t quite what I was expecting. I thought this would be another motivational book telling you to grow a better IQ if you want to be wittier and sound more intelligent than you really are. But inside, we are introduced to a whole new framework for how to speak, think and behave around people, a new way of thinking that we were only barely aware of on the surface. The book starts off with a powerful premise: You are about to embark on a journey into the depths of your mind and what gives you the feeling of chemistry with one person, and what gives you the worst feeling of all with another: complete apathy and instant forgetting. I found the Pygmalion effect to be of real interest because so many of our conflicts and misunderstandings could be avoided right there of we only followed this scientific study. In reading this book, we come to recognize that: "Social intelligence and understanding the relationships that surround us are key to getting what you want in life.”The science behind the studies use to deliver the lessons on social interaction and connectivity are solid, and you can tell Patrick King knows his stuff. Chapter 1 starts things off by diving into the effects of social interaction sites and the impact they have on our social skills. As we learn here in chapter 1: We need to be around others for our mental health, no matter our temperament or personality type. What is also interesting is that, a study done by researcher Dunbar proposed that an average human can comfortably maintain only about 150 stable relationships at any given time. This really made me rethink the connection to social networking.Chapter 2 gets into the relationship between popularity, social skills and the level of dopamine that we regulate by consuming things like sugar or alcohol, or, acting out in ways that feel good in the short term but hold us back in the long run. There is a great piece of advice in chapter 2: starve yourself of dopamine until you spend time with people. Making conscious choices to do fewer of the things that give us those quick and easily repetitive dopamine hits will have a positive long-term impact on our feelings of motivation and reward in social situations, which in turn can help us to become more popular. Now, without reciting the rest of the book and give you something to look forward to when reading it, here is a glimpse into what to expect...++Chapter 3 is about the value of having a filter when you speak and understanding when it’s time to simply shut up. ++Chapter 4 shows the surprising value of being happy and positive for your social success and likability.++Chapter 5, about perception, talks about your perception of the people you interact with impacts what you think of them, how you approach them, how you feel about them, and the impressions that you give them of you. ++Chapter 6 talks about some of the science behind the influence that your behavior toward other people has on how they act toward you.++Chapter 7, "A Simple Roadmap”, gets into some of the direct methods of socializing that will increase your likability and help you to form better relationships with others. ++Chapter 8, Emotional Calibration, is about relating to people by understanding how you affect them and what else they are affected by can enable you to build close and intimate relationships with others through more personal communication with them.++Chapter 9, Traits For Social Catastrophe, to learn about what can make you a social catastrophe so that you can avoid the mistakes that could make everything you’ve learned so far go to waste. ++Chapter 10, “The Interconnected World”, we learn that our social standing is often affected by factors out of our control—it is not solely a result of our own actions. Finally, Chapter 11 “Social Efficiency”, is about being selective in your social efforts and is a key part of being successful in your social life and maximizing your likeability. You need to know where to put your time, effort, and energy so that you don’t waste resources on something that will never succeed.***The Bottom Line On “The Science of Social Intelligence”This is a great book for someone who wants to move from shallow social connection to a deeper, more profound connection within themselves and society. I love the amount of research and case studies that were introduced to back up the evidence. I would definitely recommend this as a must-read if your looking to level up your game and boost your social intelligence.

I read the author's book entitled the science of likability and thought this looked like a good follow on to the topic. Social intelligence after all is necessary as a component of likability. They are all under the same umbrella of succeeding with people, aren't they? Anyway another 5 star book here very deservedly so. Check out both of these books to get better with people in a very general sense. No matter your life or job, it will always help you out.

This excellent book is very readable and well organized. It is contemporary and draws from modern life for examples and topics. Patrick King provides digestible steps towards increased understanding of social intelligence and in what easy to follow ideas to implement in one’s own life and relationships. I am glad I read this book and recommend it to anyone, young or old, who wishes to refresh their position in life.

. Socially conscious parents and public schools should have taught most of these skills. Some of the book will be "Duh" except for the totally socially inept. Reinforces good practices and offers a different slant on others.

I knew I was missing the Mark socially iI just wasn't sure how. I tend to be too nice, I butt in in conversation where I should have been a better listener. I need to move out of my comfort zone a little more often. This book has some really great information.. I found it easy to read . I read the full book , that doesn't happen for me with this Type of book. my Thanks to Patrick king

Cost-benefit: cost: equivalent to starbucks coffee, benefit: understanding people better and (for me) being able to flirt better. Priceless right? I'm half kidding but if we hold any psychological studies to be real evidence of how things work, then this book is a gold mine of how to deal with people in all situations!
