About the Author
Gianaclis Caldwell and her family operate Pholia Farm, an off-grid, raw milk cheese dairy in Oregon. She is the author of the award-winning Mastering Artisan Cheesemaking, as well as other books on cheesemaking and running a dairy. Applying a holistic, organic management approach to the health of her goats comes naturally for Gianaclis: She was raised on an organic farm; her parents were chiropractors; and she pursued a career in nursing. I simply cannot say enough good things about this book. It is so well presented and full of such good information that it is an absolute joy to read. If you are fascinated by goats, interested in keeping goats, or already keep goats and just want a nice all-in-one resource, this is the book for you. Couldn't ask for a better overall guide to goats and goat keeping. Worth. Every. Penny.
Wish I had this book a couple of years ago as I started my adventure into the goat world. Tons of information. I love the diagrams of the goat anatomy that is in this book. Things are explained out so I can understand.Little pricey and I cringed when I bought it, but after reading it and after trying some of the things in the book.. worth every penny.
I can't say enough good things about this book. It's a great resource, with tons of anatomical drawings and photos--in color. (I like this better than the Storey guide.) Especially helpful if you are interested in pasture-based systems and don't use meds unless you have to, although conventional and alternative treatments are both discussed, pro vs con. It might be the only goat book you need, at least as a beginner. Also, great references in the appendix.
I've purchased SEVERAL goat books to help educate myself before we get goats this spring. This is hands down the most informative book of them all. Well written and easy to follow.
You must have this book if you have goats or if you consider having them. The information in it is priceless and it gives a very modern approach to caring for a healthy herd, not dismissing the use of conventional medication when absolutely necessary, but also providing valuable resources and information so you know how to care for your goats, maintaining a vibrant, healthy, mostly problem free herd. When there is a problem though, this book gives you the tools to assess the situation and know what to do. Really, a must have!
I probably have a dozen books on goat care and this is by far my favorite! The content is easy to read and understand. The book is well organized and if you are looking for something specifically it is easy to search. I love the color pictures and high quality paper and print. There are new ideas here and ways to help you manage your goat herd more naturally. I also love that the author shares different view points, examples and stories. Definitely worth every penny!

I’ve bought several other Goat books. I wasted my time not buying this one first. It has everything. Buy it you won’t be sorry. Please read before getting goats. So many get goats then read after getting the goats like me and my goats may have suffered a tad with my incompetent thought of how to take care of them or get Goats and read this to them right away as you watch them play. Goats are great this book is almost as good as having the really thing.
