Review
"Highly description and comprehensive... this book offers guidance and strategic pathways to live and thrive with adult-onset hearing loss." -- Kirkus Reviews. "Bouton presents her most extensive, most helpful, most personal and most current work on hearing loss. Smart Hearing is an authentic and thoroughly honest book... If you have hearing loss yourself or have someone in the family who is faced with the problem, you will benefit from this book, as will hearing care providers / audiologists and ENT doctors... In my opinion, there is no other book at present which is simultaneously as personal and well-researched ... as Katherine Bouton's Smart Hearing.-- Siegfried Karg, former Vice president of the European Federation of Hard of Hearing People "Katherine Bouton's latest book, Smart Hearing -- Strategies, Skills and Resources for Living Better with Hearing Loss, is just that -- an excellent guide to living a better life with hearing loss. Using personal anecdotes and containing extensive research on assistive listening devices, the book provides a road map for people at all stages of their hearing loss journey. If you think you may have hearing loss, or know you do, this book is required reading."-- Shari Eberts, "Living with Hearing Loss"Â

From the Author
Although for most of my life I identified myself as a writer and editor, I now say that my work is education and advocacy for the deaf and hard of hearing. It took me a long time to get to the point where I could even admit my loss, much less make it my profession. I lost most of the hearing in my left ear when I was 30. It happened suddenly, seemingly overnight. I went to various doctors and had blood tests and an MRI scan, but none of them yielded even a hint of what might have caused the loss. For the next 20 years, I ignored it. I did not get a hearing aid. I did not ask for accommodations. I simply hoped for the best. By the time I turned 50, I had no hearing in the left ear and very little in the right. It was only when my hearing -- and consequently my life -- crashed in 2008 that I sought help, opened up, joined a support group. That group was the Hearing Loss Association of America. In Smart Hearing I've collected information from many sources, including from my colleagues in HLAA. The book has hard practical advice about hearing aids and telecoils and hearing loops, but it also addresses the softer, daily issues that people with hearing loss encounter. It discusses the denial, anger, and depression that those with newly severe hearing loss often face, as I did. You can find a lot of this information on the Internet, but I've done that research for you, culled the useful and accurate from the dross, and assembled it in one package. Some chapters include more information than most people want (technical details on hearing aid brands and styles, for instance), others probably not enough (citations of scientific studies). There is something for everyone, I hope, but not everyone needs everything. My readers are probably primarily those who have hearing loss, but I hope that their friends and family, their teachers, their psychotherapists, their religious leaders, their book club members, and -- not least -- their employers will all also read this book. Hearing loss is not an easy condition to understand, and those who know and love and work with people with this loss need this information as much as those directly affected by it.Â

Excellent guide and resource for those on a hearing loss journey. Inspiring. Engaging. Uses great personal anedotes and extensive research. She offers valuable tips from interacting with others to exploring your various options. She covers the stages a hearing loss person goes through, as she too experienced... I speak from experience too. At 4, suddenly major loss of high frequency in both ears. Like her, had to use speech therapy to relearn speaking. Learn lip reading...But for next 60 years hearing aids wouldn't make a difference for my condition. My understanding of movies & tv drop to 30%, even at high volume. But recent training enable me to now use hearing aid. And yes, I went through the same stages before getting hearing aids, just much more rapidly. What a difference! Read her book! Take action. Test various solutions. Find the best one for you. I went through 3 before found a great solution.
Very much liked the book. Helps me understand that hearing impairment can remain as a strong handicap to cope with even with the best technology currently available.
