I just wanted to give people a little info on the book itself; I'm not going to jump into the "are there really angels," "is this book safe," "could you get yourself cursed" debate.The book has many black and white illustrations; there is probably one every three to five pages or so. They are good looking, but this definitely isn't a picture book.The book is a pretty good size, and has MANY more angels than I was aware of; it'll take me a while to get through all of them.The book is indeed a dictionary. While there are longer passages and descriptions which I found fun to read, this book is a list of the angels, categorized by name, with anything from a one sentence blurb to a few pages devoted to descriptions and info about them. If you are looking for a dictionary, it's spectacular.If that description sounds like what you want, you should definitely pick up this book. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

The illustrations and pictures of works of art depicting Angels are well selected. Although I wish all the Illustrations from Thomas Heywood's Hierarchie of the Blessed Angels had been included instead of just a few. And one last thing about this book, it was featured in the film "The Prophecy" starring Christopher Walken.

Very interesting and loaded with information. Of course you have to believe in it all if you buy the book. I was happy with it and believe most of the information is correct. A lot of research was obviously done just to get all of the info into the book. It is a dictionary so arranged alphabetically. In all, it's quite amazing.

I purchased this book for my son who loves reading about the Bible, Angels, Mythologies, etc. We ordered this book and the back was very damaged. I contacted the seller and was told a new one was sent out, we never received it.My son is diagnosed with Autism so trying to read a book which is falling apart is very stressful to him, but since he had already seen the cover and read the back, he really wanted to get the new book. After we realized that we were never were going to receive the replacement book which we were told was sent, which may have been stolen during the delivery process for all that we know, he has been trying to read the book praying that it stays together while I am praying for no crisis if it does not, he seems to love the information which is included in the book.I would refer this book to a friend.

My 5th grader reads aloud for 45 minutes every day. This has been a life-changing book for her (and myself) as it opens littles eyes to a world they take for granted. We have paused many times throughout to talk about various life-lessons, gratitude, faith, judgement and prejudice, humanity, culture, oppression, victory, perspective and on and on... we cried and laughed -and are still talking about it... Martin and Caitlin and their families are now part of our day to day lives and conversations... exceptional and brilliant presentation for all ages. Thank you.

When I ordered this book, I was intrigued by the story of friendship between two teens from opposite sides of the world. The early chapters establish the contrast between the lives of a teen enjoying the amenities of suburban American life as compared with her Zimbabwean counterpart, who must set aside his studies in search of the basics for the survival of his family. These two teens initially understand so little about each others' lives, families, cultures, and countries but share an inquisitiveness that slowly fosters a lasting friendship. I returned to their stories with the same eagerness they felt awaiting an answer to their last letter and found myself crying over the sincerity of the struggle to help a friend transition from the depths of poverty. I visited Zimbabwe many years ago and was happy to read about the familiar sights as well as recall the warmth of its people - so sad to know how difficult life has become there. So much was accomplished through the penpal diplomacy of these two teens and their supportive families - we all have much to learn from their example.

I started reading this because it was a summer reading requirement for my son, as he prepares to middle school. I loved the honest, real story, starting with Martin just wanting to connect with Caitlin as one kid to another, rather than his status impacting her opinion of him. Then, his story unfolded in ways that helped both change their worlds and those of many others. In times when Americans are so fortunate to have so much, this book represents a hopeful, honest reminder about life in less fortunate parts of the world, inspiring us to do more, give more, and be more for others.

I bought this book because I had 100+ penpals when I was in middle and high school. They were from all around the world. I have found I learned so much about the world from my penpals.Honestly, I couldn’t put the book down. I remember waiting so long for letters from Mauritius or Lithuania or Tonga. In the 1970s, mail might have taken longer, but it was so exciting to get letters from friends. As I’ve grown older and the internet & social media has brought the world even closer, I have found some of my penpals! It is great to know what they are doing at the same time I’m reading their post! Waiting for letters and packages to arrive instilled patience.Caitlin and Martin, thank you for writing this book together. It is beautifully written. Martin, you are a strong man! Blessings to your family here and in Zimbabwe. Caitlin, you must be a person who loves the world like I do! We have 2 Russian Imports ourselves! We adopted 2 children from Kaliningrad, Russia in 2004. They are not biologically related but they are brother & sister.I will be recommending this to my penpal reconnections on Facebook. Bright children capable of doing so much more but who will end up working meaningless jobs stocking shelves at Walmart or flipping burgers their whole lives simply because they were born in the wrong zip code. The one thing I found lacking was better data to support his conclusions. But then again it would have made the book less readable and inaccessible to a general audience.I bought a copy for my upper middle class in-laws hoping that it might make them understand at least why I wince every time they rejoice about getting coveted internships for their friends daughter/son by using this or that connection.

This is an informative and compelling look at the growth of income inequality in the US, but it presents only part of the picture. To begin with what's new and different in this book, it looks at income inequality in a different focus. Instead of zeroing on the one percent as so many have done, Reeves focusses on the 19% -- those whose incomes come in between the 80th and the 99th percentile, a group that he describes as the upper middle class. The incomes of this group have grown much faster than incomes for the country as a whole (if less rapidly than the incomes of the 1%). Moreover, income gains have been bolstered and protected by other benefits, political and social in nature. The tax deduction for mortgage interest and the 529 college savings programs, for example, mostly benefit the upper middle class. The children of the 19%, on average, attend far better schools than most American children, and are far likelier to attend and graduate from college. This is not accidental, Reeves argues. Upper middle class parents are fiercely focussed on getting their children the best educations possible, by restrictive zoning and legacy admissions as well as by intensive home support. It's a compelling argument, and we -- most readers of this book are probably members of the upper middle class -- need to recognize that the deck is stacked in our favor.But it's also an incomplete argument. An excellent review of the book in "The Economist" points out the basic problem of focussing on the 19% rather than on the 1%, saying "Since around 2000 the incomes of the upper middle class, excluding the top 1%, have not grown by much, and the income premium earned by those with university degrees has plateaued." Over that period, the income of the 1% has soared: in fact, since 2009, the 1% has copped about 95% of ALL income gains. Politically, focussing on the barriers that the upper middle class has established to protect it's position is an admirable goal. But so is focussing on the massive income gains that the upper class -- if we may so call the 1% -- has wrested from the system. All in all, this book is well worth reading, but remember that the 19% is only part of the problem.

This book analyses what Americans in the top 20% income brackets do to make their children the most qualified for the best colleges and jobs and how this causes inequality and lack of upward mobility. He does not say this is the only cause, with mass immigration of unskilled workers being another one. He proposes possible policy solutions and points out that many of them are opposed by both Democrats and Republicans. THe biggest potential value of this book for parents is that it is a primer of how to get your children into the best schools and jobs although it will be harder for you than somebody making $200K a year. I plan to give this book to my son for that purpose. You may not agree with the author that the current situation is unfair or agree with all his policy recommendations but it will be good for you to know details of the situation.

This is a quick, overview perspective book. There are some unique points, but the actual content is probably better covered in Charles Murray's Coming Apart or Our Kids by Robert Putnam. However, I give Reeves credit for not holding back and providing some much needed honesty.

The most important part is that Reeves himself falls into the category he discusses, the top 20% of earners in the US.Because of Reeves' position this is not a book about guilt. It is a book about self-reflection on our society's idea of the "self made man". How self made are the children who have a golden parachute, and how much opportunity are we taking away from kids who maybe would have gotten that internship if you hadn't made that call? This book is genuinely about wealth (which to a great extent means white) privilege and the responsibilities that comes with these.What makes this topic so difficult is the fact that we feel like, there's so little we can do about the whole thing - I'm gonna give to the ACLU every month and just have to sit feeling bad that our parents' are going to leave us a million dollar house - Dream Hoarders offers real, tangible, put into motion tomorrow suggestions for how to negate the hoarding of privileges that the upper middle class is doing.Reeves is also pretty funny in that dry, I'm mocking you but you accept it because you like me way, that only British people can pull off so the book is enormously readable too (for a book on socioeconomics).

This book was okay. He makes some good points about the causes of inequality. But for some reason I feel like this is just half of a book. The same content is repeated in the 2nd half of this one...

Barely a year after pilots of the Royal Air Force won the Battle of Britain in “their finest hour,” the little-known tropical island of New Britain was the site of the Australian Army’s darkest hour. Fourteen hundred men and six nurses had been deployed to the Southwest Pacific island in mid-1941 to fortify and defend Rabaul, capital of Australia’s mandated territories.      The bulk of Lark Force was the 2/22nd Infantry Battalion, which was equipped with World War I-vintage weapons. They were a close-knit group, mostly volunteers from Victoria. After completing their fortification of the strategic port and its two airfields, they settled into the routine of garrison duties, confident of being relieved within a year.      But the Japanese had big plans for Rabaul. It was to be the linchpin of their campaign to conquer the Southwest Pacific, providing them with a major military complex that would support future offensives against the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, and possibly even Australia itself. At 2:30 A.M. on January 23, 1942, the darkest hour of the day, an overwhelming Japanese invasion force swarmed ashore. Overrun in a matter of hours, the Australian defenders withdrew deep into the jungles of New Britain, where the unforgiving environment, the cruel Japanese, and even fate were against them. The invasion cost the Japanese only sixteen dead and forty-eight wounded, but the toll among Australian soldiers climbed to staggering proportions. Ultimately, less than a fourth of the garrison escaped from New Britain after enduring months of deprivation; the rest were taken prisoner. Of that number, approximately two hundred were executed, the majority in one horrific massacre. The worst was yet to come. Five months after the invasion, 850 enlisted POWs and approximately 200 civilian men were crowded aboard a Japanese ship for transportation to Hainan Island, off the China coast. In a terrible twist of fate, an American submarine torpedoed the ship at 2:30 A.M. on July 1, 1942. The prisoners, locked in the holds, had no chance of escape. The sinking of the Montevideo Maru remains the worst maritime disaster in Australia’s history. Ironically, Lieutenant Chester W. Nimitz, Jr., the son of the commander-in-chief of the Pacific Fleet, participated in the attack. Darkest Hour follows several key individuals through their experiences in Lark Force. One is an American-born soldier, Private Jim Thurst, a musician in the renowned battalion band. Another is Lieutenant Lorna Whyte, a small but tireless Army nurse. Others include affable soldiers and sharp junior officers who used keen ingenuity to overcome numerous hardships. Special attention is devoted to the dramatic stories of the men who escaped. Their accounts of survival and heroism are among the most inspiring of the Pacific War. If you want to know how NOT to fight a war, this is the book you should get. The whole event of Rabaul is a testimony to Australian troops who were left there to fend for themselves when the Japanese started the Pacific version of WWII. Their only hope was their belief that the American's were heading their way to rescue them. Unfortunately, most of the US Pacific Fleet was trying to save themselves in the western Pacific. The whole narrative of Rabaul is formed around a comparatively small group of soldiers, doctors and nurses trying to stay alive. The other primary storyline is the butchery by Japanese soldiers who would rather murder the Aussies instead of keeping them as prisoners, which I might add, sealed the fate of the Japanese once they were found still alive by American Marines in their own battles of hell. Some of the prisoners were placed in an unmarked Japanese ship and sent to Japan, whereupon the ship was sunk by an American submarine in the South China Sea. The whole event of Rabaul was only the first step in the Japanese attempted conquest of Borneo and New Guinea later on in 1942.This book is the first of the long, bloody war of attrition between the Japanese and the Australians and eventually the Americans who met the Japanese on the Kokoda Trail in northern New Guinea early on in 1942.

A gem of a book which covers a little documented period in which the lives and fortunes of those who stood in the way of Japan's conquering Armies in the South Pacific were lost, and perhaps more accurately in this case, sacrificed for little if any good.Most readers of WWII History recognize Rabaul as a Japanese Naval stronghold which ultimately was bombed into nothing but an occupied atoll with no strategic value and ultimately 'left to wither on the vine.'Few know the pre-invasion history of the island and its place as an Australian Territory in the pre war years. More importantly, few have ever read of what happened to those unfortunates at the start of the War.Gamble's book provides a well written story of the fates of the Australian civilians, Administrators, and ultimately its defenders (i.e., Lark Force), a weak battalion of Diggers sent at the last minute to oppose what was an overwhelming Force sent by the Japanese to establish their doomed stronghold.The Australian government's decision to abandon these citizens and soldiers is examined and that decision, together with the fact that over 1,000 of their citizens were killed in a U.S. torpedo attack on an unidentified Hell Ship is the horrific beginning and end of Lark Force. That the deaths were not known or revealed to the public until after the War was both a tragedy to families and friends of the deceased, but also, as is revealed in the book a cause for mourning countrywide.It's good to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many Allies at the outset of the War. One can only imagine the terror and frustration of those who by circumstance found themselves caught in that crucible so many years ago in an age which is rapidly becoming a lost human memory.Bruce Gamble's book is a good read and a needed reminder.

Mr. Gamble has written two books about this early WW2 battle. "Fortress Rabaul" covered this conflict from the perspective of the antagonists on both sides; this book tells the story as lived by the unfortunate forces of the Australian Army garrison in New Britain, known as "Lark Force". This force, totalling about 1,400 personnel, was woefully inadequate for the task of defending against an overwhelming Japanese invasion force, but their requests for reinforcements, aircraft, artillery, and finally, evacuation, were adamently denied by Australian Chiefs of Staff and War Cabinet; they were told to hold their ground and fight to the last man. Among their number were 6 women of the Australian Army Nursing Service, who were captured by the Japanese along with many of the other garrison personnel, and were eventually shipped off to Japan for internment.This is the story of the heart-wrenching hardships endured by these people; some managed to escape through the jungle, many died trying, and many were executed in terrible ways by their Japanese captors. Those who survived the murderous treatment by the Japanese were used as slave labor, subsisting on starvation rations. Many were sent to Japan aboard "Hell ships"; One of these ships, the "Montevideo Maru", was hit by a torpedo from a US Navy submarine and went down with 800 POWs locked in the holds below decks.There are terrible accounts of brutality and massacres by the Japanese soldiers, who considered any warrior who surrendered to be less than human; therefore, they did not hesitate to beat, bludgeon, bayonet, shoot, and starve their POWs. Many men starved to death and others were worked to death. This book is well researched and massively documented: it is the 4th book about Japanese POWs I have read in the past 2 months, and the last for awhile. I need some less-dark reading. I recommend this and the other Gamble book, "Fortress Rabaul", especially to those who think America was wrong to drop those two bombs. We were the "good guys".

Street food is readily available, including deep fried bugs. Thai food or vegeterian are also widely available. If you want chinese go to Yaowarat. and for Indian try the indian neighborhood. As a beekeeper that has only one year under my belt, I found this book had some interesting information. It is more philosophical that practical. That's fine if it is philosophy you are looking for. If you are looking for practical nuts and bolts information on how to raise bees organically, this is not the book for you.

This book had a lot of good information. But it's not an all-information source. Don't make it your only book. The book fails to describe in much detail the equipment or tools you will need. The author rambles on and on about the ethics of organic farming and bee-keeping and sarcastically in a round about way discusses why you should make the choices he has made, but that it's ultimately your choice, but, ya know, make the organic choice.I think most of us wouldn't be reading the book if we hadn't drawn many of those conclusions ourselves. Why not to use miticides, not to use HFCS, why to be gentle and slow with the bees and on and on. These are all very good topics and deserve a mention. They take up much more of the book than is needed and in the process the details you really need are lost. I was looking for MORE information on what I could feed (aside from the commercially available products) and how I could control pests organically. I distinctly remember very little information on screened bottom boards (again, lacking the details on equipment) and that being something I was desperate for information for.Aside from those set backs, it's a good book. You will take away some important information and that makes it worth reading. If you're in the fence about organic bee-keeping then read this book and others like it!

While the author seems to be a little 'preachy' at times about the "evils" of industrial beekeeping, he does provide an EXCELLENT resource for handling bees in a more natural and non-chemical way. He focuses on essential oils and 'soft' treatments. The best part of this book is that he explains WHY things work biologically.I would recommend that any new beekeeper first purchase the "dummies" book, read it, and then purchase this book as well. It fills in gaps that I didn't even know that I had in my knowledge base.

The bee population is on life support in the U.S. We are in danger of loosing as much as one third the food we depend on because of lack of pollinators. The large beekeepers spread disease when the hives are transported all over the country. Small, well trained beekeepers are needed. This book address many of the problems, but I do not believe there is any good solution to the many problems facing bees. Research needs to be done. Natural solutions need to be found before it is too late. We all need to work together to keep the population of bees alive until solutions are found. This is a good book and a good place to start the education needed to keep and protect bees.

The author undoubtedly knows his stuff about bees. He has tons of experience and is a good writer. I enjoyed the way he focuses on sustainability in beekeeping and is open to new ideas. I like the way he offers multiple points of view on how best to handle each kind of problem you may encounter, from insect pests, to neighbors who hate bees, etc.

Full of detailed information. Some I've seen before, but the good thing is much of the methods and techniques were explained with more specific details that made the difference in many new situations. Experience is the best teacher and Mr. Conrad provided his to help me and my bees continue to gain more over the long haul. Very helpful.

This is an interesting read, a bit on the dry side sometimes, but it is a book to teach. I would recommend knowing about bees a bit more than someone trying to learn about bees.

A great bee book!Ross helps the reader become secure in beekeeping the natural way.He especially goes into great detail about the pests that plague bees today and how he's successfully found ways to help the bees defend themselves against them.Highly recommend this book to beekeepers!
